Service Description

Learn how to model compound flooding events with the SFINCS (Super-Fast Inundation of CoastS) engine, a reduced-complexity tool developed by Deltares. SFINCS offers high computational efficiency without compromising accuracy, making it ideal for simulating flooding over large coastal areas. This course provides the skills to leverage SFINCS for early warning systems and multi-hazard risk analysis. What You’ll Learn This course offers a blend of theory and hands-on exercises to develop practical modeling skills with SFINCS. You will: • Understand the physics behind compound flooding and why traditional models may struggle with large-scale simulations. • Explore SFINCS’s fast computation capabilities and its applications for quick-scan flood estimates and early warning systems. • Set up a SFINCS model from scratch to simulate flooding scenarios efficiently. • Learn to interpret SFINCS input and output for research and consultancy. SFINCS is a powerful tool for fast, large-scale flood estimates and will soon be integrated into the Delft3D Suite. Furthermore, it can be deployed in Delft-FEWS early warning systems. Who Should Attend? This course is intended for: • Project engineers, researchers, and PhD students with programming and modeling experience (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or Fortran). Whether you are focused on flood risk management or early warning systems, this course provides the tools to use SFINCS for fast, reliable flood simulations. Course Format and Dates This online course includes self-paced learning and instructor-led sessions for flexibility and expert guidance. Online sessions: • Session 1: Tuesday, April 22, 2025 – 9AM PT / 12PM ET to 1PM PT / 4PM ET • Session 2: Thursday, April 24, 2025 – 9AM PT / 12PM ET to 1PM PT / 4PM ET To ensure personalized support, the course is limited to 9 participants per trainer, with ample time for Q&A. Preparation and Technical Requirements Before the course, participants will receive: • SFINCS software and course materials. System Requirements: • A Windows OS computer (required for SFINCS). • Installation of the SFINCS engine and MATLAB Runtime Compiler. • Installation of a Python environment. In preparation of the training, we’ll send you all the material and will ask you to download the stand-alone SFINCS executable and install our Python environment on your own machine. Sign up now to develop your expertise in flood modeling with SFINCS!
